Connecting the Troopers of Today with the Veterans of Yesterday.
Fellow Dragoons!! I am trying to collect information on all of the border camps 2d ACR had from 1948-1992. If you have stories, info, pictures, or anything else (IE: Berets, Uniforms, TA-50) PLEASE PLEASE post and share. We (2nd Cav Reed Museum) dont really have much info on the Cold War. I would like to build a file for future reference and to preserve YOUR history to the Regiment. Thank you all for your time and Service. Toujours Pret!
I have some comments on My page, and Bamberg Group as well as E troop Group page
We use to have to have a certain amount of German coins " Pfennigs" to use at pay phones, due to loss of radio transmissions. It was part of our inspection layout before patrol.
PRC 77 and batteries for dismounting patrol, Border Map, MRE's, Water Can, Gas Can
Wool Army blankets for winter.
I am currently TDY in Europe and am planning on making a trip to see the museum, which I have not been to since I was stationed at Camp Hof in the early 80's. Any chance I could be given a street address or directions from the gate to find it. I have plenty of pictures to share, but will have to wait until I return home next month. Can discuss when I am there.
Planning on coming to the museum as my current TDY winds down, sometime next week or the week after. Any chance of getting a buildkng number and hours of operation? I spent 5 years with the Regiment in the 80's, including 2 as a Border Operations NCO at Camp Hof. Lookjng forward to it! AB/CM
David, Try and leave a message for Ryan T. Meyer the Curator, he checks in here often, if you don't hear from him by the time you get there, the guards at the main gate at Rose barracks should be able to help you. Do you need a escort to get on base? if you do, they should be able to help you. I can not remember the bldg. number but I think it was near a wash rack it used to be a old horse stable they remodeled it is very nice. I think the Regiment has already left for Afghanistan. Check out Memorial park while you are there also, and they also have a burger king on base. It is a nice facility Rose barracks, and you are not far from Amberg which is a great city to explore. Enjoy your time, and enjoy some Bier and some brats... I have a lot of pictures on my page from when I went over in 2011. Toujours Pret.
Thanks Shannon, I will try that.
Wasnt able to get through on here, but I went to Vilseck and found the museum, alot of memories flowed back as I remembered going to the museum wheni t was at Camp Hof, and was a stop when they did 7 Corps Border Tours.......one more thing off the bucket list.
Good picture, James!!
I have a couple of sights here and have some pictures of my tour in Bamberg 58/60 Spent some time in Graf and Coburg. We were a Howitzer Co and didn't pull much border duty as I remembered. Gyro'd over in Feb 58 with the Regiment from Baltimore, the first troops to ship from Baltimore since the IIWW. Went over on the Rose to Bremehaven and the first thing I see there is a PEPSI sign. Was in Nuremberg in late 58 I beleive for communications school. Spent time ( leave in Garmish and toured Neuschwanstein Castle and also attended a few Octoberfests. Great tour of duty and proud to have served in the 2nd ACR. Any pictures in particular you are looking for?
