Montieth Barracks was not a cav assignement but this former cav troop spent four years in Nuremberg.
In 1985 I returned to Germany as Platoon Sgt , 2nd Platoon which had a mission of supporting the 1st Armored Division. I made SFC there and went next door was interim 1sg for F Co (Medical), 123 Maintenance Bn.This unit was stationed on Montieth barracks nearby in Fuerth.
After the temporary 1SG assignment I went to 1st Armored Diviions Artillery S3 as their Chemical NCO at Pinder Barracks in nearby Zirndorf .I left Germany at a time it was obvious the world was gonna change drastically . During my tour I escorted Chemical and Nuclear weapons out of storage sites and out of europe. While in 1AD Divarty our S3 batttle plans room was opened up for Russian generals to evaluate and four months after my departure from Germany the wall came down in Berlin.

This tour was a strange time from 1985 it started out with the unit next door taking losses in Berlin by a disco bombing. Lots of terrorism alerts infact my then 5 year old went to kindergarten at a bus stop with armed guards and rode with armed soldiers. One day he ran home and said the bus stop was not safe and scared to go to school because there were no guards. I forgot to tell him the terrorist threat was long over.
The end of the tour it was obvious the Cold war would be soon over. Here is a article about the closing of Montieth Barracks:
