Dragoon Base

Connecting the Troopers of Today with the Veterans of Yesterday.

Good evening to all 2nd Cavalry Troopers,

I know that many of us, perhaps not all, have a Cavalry Hat. It may be a Stetson or any other Slouch or Western style. Most that I have seen have a 3 or 4 inch brim, 4 to 5 inch Crown with a Center Crease and some have a pinch towards the front. Most usually Black in Colour, although there are a couple of units that wear a Tan colored hat

I have set up 2 hats and one Tam for the 3 Cavalry Units that I served in. One for the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, one for the 12th Cavalry Regiment and the Scottish Tam for the 10th Cavalry Regiment (looks different but kinda cool)

Now, what to put on it .... and where?

I have read this: Cav Hat MOI and understand what it says. Crossed Sabers with or without Regimental numbers and Rank insignia, centered on the front of the Crown and the DUI (Crest) centered on the back. This is for Active Duty Personnel mostly. Does it hurt for someone, like me, Former Military but not retired, to put the DUI above the Sabers on the front? Which is how I have done it.  OR.....should I buy some E-5 Rank Pins to put on the front and move the DUI's to the rear?

I invite all members of Dragoon Base to post pictures of their Cavalry Hats, if you so wish.

Frank, thanks for starting this discussion, I just love hats in general, western style hats especially, I have always preferred a 4" turned down brim with a raw edge the 4 5/8" cattle man crease with a 1" grosgrain band like the one I am wearing in these pictures. I also like the center pinch crown like the one LTC. Denny is wearing. As far as what to put on it and wear to put it, there are some guide lines but mostly for the active duty Troopers. I only remember seeing one or two former Troopers wearing his former rank on their hats and I don't think anybody would say much to you and if they do you just tell them its my Stetson and I earned it and I will put on it what I damn well please. I have seen some guys put their former DUI's on them also along the sides. I think you should also be able to put on there, along the sides, the little miniature medal ribbon that was in the medal boxes they give you when you received one. If I was going to put my former rank on my Stetson I would put it on the back side. I think only active duty troopers should wear the rank on the front in my humble opinion. But like I said earlier its your Stetson you earned it you put on it what you want and where you want it and wear it with pride, because it is a small, special band of Brothers that wear them.

Thanks for the reply and pics. I am hoping that others on the Dragoon Base will add both comments and pics of their Hats. Cav Hats, Western hats, Border hats, whatever. I need to get a pic of the Scottish Balmoral Tam that I put the 10th Cav pins on (sort of like a beret with a red toorie [pom-pom] in the top center of it.)

Fort Carson, CO is where I was with the 12th and 10th CAV units and really got into the western wear and hats there. Went to a hat shop and had one custom made for me. Still have it and I left Ft Carson in 1971.

I do believe that I shall keep the Stetsons as I have them set. That is the way I had envisioned them. Like you, if I put a rank pin on them, it would be on the back.

Toujours Pret

Here is a couple of pics of the Western Hat I had made for me. I am in the Plaid shirt. My buddy Scotty and I were singing "Can I have this Dance" at a New Years Party.

Here's a picture of me in the 2nd Cav Hat

Frank, here's a pic of my patrol cap. It's the same as Rob Torrances'.It's not the original cap but it is an original tab and rank.

Looks great Carl,

All we had in 66-68 was the OD Baseball Cap. I do not recall seeing any Border Tabs either, but I was in HQ Trp so did not do Border Duty. Nice pic, thanks for sharing it with us.

Toujours Pret

I have been looking for a border Tab like that one but to no avail the only thing out there is the old German made one with the edges cut off flat not rounded like yours as a tab should be

I've put a DUI on the bottom of the placque

That's what mine looks like Frank

Gonna throw this one at ya from left field. Perhaps a bit OT and definitely NOT U.S. Cavalry issue.. LOL

It was popular with the Scottish Border Rievers (Raiders). I dinnae ken if Jim Clendenen's ancestors were Borderers or no.

There's even a G.I.Joe figure wearing a Stetson....."Wild Bill" the Air Cavalry Scout

This was the third design of the 2d Cavalry DUI, worn from 1924-1931. The sharp points on the ends of the bottom scroll again called for a redesign.
