Dragoon Base

Connecting the Troopers of Today with the Veterans of Yesterday.

Does anyone know the date or approximate month and year that the 2nd Armored Cavalry change their unit designations in 59 or 60. I was over there but do not recall when we changed our unit title. I have been going thru some of my letter and 201 file. I know when I departed from Amberg in 61, I Troop had been in stalled as the lead troop in the third squadron. Units being I, K, L, M, and How Btry. I Know that in October 1959, I Troop was "G" Company, 2nd Armd Cav. I have one of my Letters Of Appreciation from General Bastion, whom I worked with on NATO Exercise "Side Track" an it is dated 5 October, 1959. I am trying to research this change over.

I have located the information. " All three armored cavalry regiments were reorganized into the D-series table of organization and equipment (TOE) during May 1960. Major changes were the redesignation of the line companies as troops, battalions as squadrons, and the establishment of regimental aviation companies. This reorganization resulted in shortages in required new equipment and in personnel needed to fill new military occupational specialties (MOS)-- especially in the aviation companies-- that were only beginning to be met at the end of 1960.
Sorry I didn't pick up on this earlier Wayne. The official date of the transformation was 23 May 1960, the Regiment's 124th birthday.

Thanks a lot Dave, I had found most of it. I had forgotten about the change, I was going thru some of my records and come across the ltr from General Bastion from VII Corp and it was addressed to G Company, I had forgotten about the redesignation of units, cause when I left in 61 for the states it was I Troop. I ended up coming right back to I Troop for a second tour. They changed the 11th and the 14th Cav at the same time...

I am listing you as a brother. Wayne

My pleasure Wayne. Thanks for the additional info.
When I left the 2nd ACR I was in Company F. The RA guys in our outfit have said the changeover occurred in early 1960 in which Company F became G Troop. Msgt Shafter Tomlin, the company first sergeant, was in Company F when the change took place.

This was the third design of the 2d Cavalry DUI, worn from 1924-1931. The sharp points on the ends of the bottom scroll again called for a redesign.
