Dragoon Base

Connecting the Troopers of Today with the Veterans of Yesterday.

The last time I was back was August 2006 to mark the 20th anniversary of my arrival in Amberg.  If you find yourselves with the means to go, do it.  You won't be sorry.  It was a little bittersweet, I admit, but I'm glad I went.  I realize that first duty station was the best time of my now 25 year career!

Here's a few links that can kind of take you back to downtown Amberg.  They are live web cams that refresh every minute.  I saved them to my favorites and everytime I think of Amberg, I'll go take a look.  Enjoy!

-'Thank you for your service Alexandra, I have some modern pics of Pond Barracks, but none that are recent; I will  try to scour the internet to determine if any are "out there." I served from '69-'72 in I troop, and at the Officers Club as asst. manager. Did alotta border tours, Graf and honenfels are my middle names. But as you said, although we spent most of our time bitching and complaining, I too look back at it as one of the most influential [and fun] times of my life. Thanks to the CAV site, I too, have made contact with some of the old dawgs of Iron Troop.

Perhaps intrestingly, I was born as Wolfgang Guber in Fuerth [no oomlaut], adopted as John Boyd, who I still am. I served in AMberg during 17 and 20 y/o; so the events in the Army and out in the economy were very formative for me. Should the Good Lord ever favor me with the ability to afford an o'seas trip, even tho I may be disappointed,  WILL go spend some time in Amberg.

If you still have family there, Iwould be very interested in our ex-bartender at the "O" club in Amberg, Dieter Gleichoff. I think the spelling is correct. Please do not go thru any extra-ordinary effort on my behalf, he is just another one of those people  that I wonder about whenever I reflect on my times at Pond Barracks.

Thank you very much for sharing your comments, Thank you for your service and Welcome.

I was there 1989 to 1991. I remember melodies very well.
