It'sreally good to read notes from you Amberg vets.  I spent 2 1/2 years there, lotta stories to tell, but you have heard them all.  Hell ofa time, I got there in 68 and left in 71.

Ed Paquette was in HQ troop Personnell with Tarvin, Cowden, Pirrung, Westgate, Cournoyer, Freedman, Noftsger, Strittmatter, any of those names ring a bell with anyone?

Tom--I, too, was a troop clerk in Amberg at the same time in Headquarters Troop.  And, I was promoted to E-5 as quickly as you were.  I had to be promoted in a tank commander's slot since clerk slots only went to E-4.  I was offered an enlistment package for Berlin that included room carpeting and a T.V.!  Last December I was in Berlin and I'm not sure it would have been a good fit, even with the carpeting.  Too busy.  And, of course, nothing like Amberg.

I was afraid, however, I would go to Viet Nam as a tanker and never re-enlisted.  Do you think I might have gone to Viet Nam as a tanker?  Often wondered about it.

I loved Amberg as well.  I have been back, but things change and the people we knew are gone, but not the memories.  Remember doing the Morning Report?  We clerks had it made--promotions, leaves, passes, work indoors, working with officers and the First Sargeant.

Hope you are well.  Winter is coming.  Are you ready up there?  (I live in CT now and it's cold enough here.)

Pulled guard duty at the air strip (always wondered why) one really cold night   trying to keep warm, I used a "church key" to carve; "1002 days left" in the office stucco wall.  After enlisting (what???) they sent me to Personal Spec school arriving in Amberg; January 1968.  I wound up in M Troop and as a company clerk working with a guy by the name of David Fuselier from Lake Charles, Louisiana.   Saw a better opportunity and moved into the Como area because the Chief at the time (Joe Hart) was short, which helped me make buck-sgt 16 months in.  I enlisted because I didn't want to go to Nam and come back in a zipper bag.  My plan didn't work out very well as I was levied to Nam in December '69.  Footnote -- I've been back to Amberg several times over the last 45 years and managed to find my 'days left' carving on the airstrip office wall. in the late 80s.   Some of my fondest memories were those two years.  Anyone have a M Troop unit roster from the 68-69 era?

My pleasure, Nelson.

I know you won't be able to make it, but here is an invitation I just now became aware of. As you mentioned you were a Vietnam vet, Arizona State University is having a Welcome Home Ceremony for Vietnam vets the 20th of this month.

Here are the details: http://dragoons.org/2015/02/13/welcome-home-ceremony-for-vietnam-vets/
