Welcome To Fiddler's Green

Halfway down the trail to Hell
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead Troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen,
And this eternal resting place is
known as Fiddler's Green
Marching past straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green
Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene,
No Trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green
And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a sabre keen,
Or on roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean.
And the hostiles come to get your scalp
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddler's Green.

Ever heard the expression, "you look like your best friend just died"?

Well, he did. I'd known Buck Heater for fifty years. I can still hit his 96 year old mom's kitchen window with a rock from my back porch, but it might take a few throws.

Though Buck never served in the military, he could party with the best of troopers, and went out the way I could only hope to. He was found sitting on his couch with an empty beer can in his hand.

I can still hear his voice...his last words to me were "at ease, Sergeant". That was his way of saying good-bye to me.

Buck, you'll always be welcome at Fiddler's Green as my guest, old buddy. First one's on you.

Not sure how many of you knew RA (Roy Franke) from Dragoon Base. His wit and wisdom kept us going for a long time on the Base. It was a crushing blow when we lost him to cancer, a blow I will never recover from. I miss him dearly.

THE OLD SNAPPING TURTLE

I snoozed by a pond at a place called the Base
When drops of water splashed on my face

Woke me right up from a minute of sleep
That seemed from the aftermath forty years deep

A turtle emerged on the bank, took a peak
A snapper I'd say from the shape of his beak

Next came a voice that was felt more than heard
A message conveyed without one spoken word

"Not many have ventured so far in this wood"
Scared me so bad that I instantly stood

"Been here a long time just waiting on you"
"I wanted to teach you a thing or two"

"You did something special to come all this way"
"Keep with you always the thoughts of this day"

"Years from this moment take time to lament"
"On riches of just but a brief moment spent"

And he was gone
