Only twice. Once was to visit the "Brigade 75" TACP, and the second was during a Winter REFORGER ('79?) when my FAC wanted to watch the Super Bowl. Considering Germany was about 4 hours ahead of Miami, I kept falling asleep during the game which was fortunate as I had to drive back to the area where the Ft. Hood unit we were supporting was bivouacked in the wee hours of 0 Dark 30! Little did I know that when we returned to Bergstrom AFB in Austin, Texas, I would be handed PCS orders to L.D. Clay Kaserne at Garlstedt, Germany (south of Bremerhaven) where Brigade 75 had relocated and designated 2nd AD (Fwd).
When I was stationed at Merrell Bks (Apr '74 - Jun '78), we went to Hohenfels mostly along with REFORGER exercises.
*Ever go out to the field, like Vilsec and Graf? I was a 72B20 Cryptographic Operator and part time Com Chief...before that a Courts and Boards Trainee, before that the Secretary for CSM Foglio, after Commo, went to the Army Education Center ......but finally got out July 23rd, 1969
Just saw the Tribuneplatz on episode 12 of Amazon Prime's "The Grand Tour" with Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. The gag was they were there because when James was telling his sat nav (in German) to the Nurburgring, it interpreted it as either "Nürnberg" or "Norisring". Remember the 200 Meilen von Nürnberg races through there?
I was attached to the 2d ACR as the ASA/Sigsec Advisor from Jan 74 to Nov 75. Worked out of the Regimental S-2 Office.
I was never stationed there but I went to a great 3-day concert at Zeppelin Stadium in 1974.
Dave,
Thanks for the heads up. Still, I think I will take that trip and see what's left of the place. I was there from '89-'93. There used to be this pizza carry out across the street..that was good pizza!!
I visited Nuremberg in 2011 with Shannon Ryan. Wasn't much left of Merrill Barracks.

This was the third design of the 2d Cavalry DUI, worn from 1924-1931. The sharp points on the ends of the bottom scroll again called for a redesign.
