Five days till Christmas. One day till Opie's birthday. The wonder of it all! Happy Birthday, Opie. I hope both of your celebrations are great. I'll tip a bottle of sarsaparilla in your honor.

I hope those snows put some water in the reservoirs.

Commander's discretion I guess.

Working on early 2d Dragoon/2d Cavalry enlistment records for the past few years, I run into all kinds of stuff that makes me stop and ponder. Sometimes a guy might desert numerous times, possibly for years, and end up finishing his enlistment and maybe even re-enlisting. Then again I run into guys who desert just one time for as little as a day, and are almost immediately dishonorably discharged.

My dad took off down the road on my tricycle, in full uniform, out the main gate and right back in ROFLMAO because I KNOW it happens. Catch-22 meets Kellys' Heroes every day. What would they do to a guy today? If they are Trans Gender, Walking off their fighting position to go have tea with Taliban or some such - they get away with it, but get caught chasing tail, or having a drink - KaBoom.

Sig,

I ran into another Fertig in the enlistments this morning but forgot to write it down and can't find where it was.

Mark, that $20 bet got me to thinking about a story my mom told me. My dad, who was the post motor officer at Ft. Banks at the time, was drinking at our house with the post commander, and both of them being pretty lit, bet Col. Beavers $50 that he could get through the main gate without post tabs or ID.

My dad took off down the road on my tricycle, in full uniform, out the main gate and right back in with the stunned guard just standing there saluting. It wasn't long after dad got back to the house that the MP's showed up and tried to arrest him, but Col. Beavers talked them into letting him go.

This was the third design of the 2d Cavalry DUI, worn from 1924-1931. The sharp points on the ends of the bottom scroll again called for a redesign.
