Semantics is one of my most favorite words.

You want confusion? The Korean War is listed as a "conflict." War was never declared.

Comment by ErnieKeel on June 15, 2018 at 6:40pm

Harold all sounds like semantics to me, and I agree Harry's definition of "war".   But, to add the confusion:  Isn't the Korean War "technically" still going on?  This is criteria to join Korean War Vet Assoc. : If you have EVER honorably served in Korea as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces September 3, 1945 to Present, or served outside of Korea June 25, 1950 to Jan. 31, 1955, you qualify to be a Regular Member of the Korean War Veterans Association, Inc.   This is from KWVA  website.

I agree with you Harry,

My argument is that the Veteran's Committee wants to honor the Korean War Veterans and I objected and asked if they were stationed in Iceland or Germany or anyplace other than the Korean peninsular they are not Korean War Veterans rather they are Cold War Veterans.  Now they want to discuss it saying that if they were in service between 1950 up until Jan 1955 they will be honored

Harold, various reference books cannot agree when the cold war ended. 1990, maybe 1991.

Tom's blushing.

How could you be a "war" veteran if you were not in a war?

Comment by Harry Warner on June 15, 2018 at 2:47pm

Harold, you may be asking for too much as to a "definition" of what constituted veteran status of wars.  It would seem to me if someone was in active duty in the ACTUAL  battles, that would qualify. I take offense by someone claiming to be a Vietnam vet just because they served during that period.    The "cold war" was not a declared war.  It probably ended when the Berlin wall came down and most likely started when I graduated high school and realized I had to work for the next 60 years.  OK, I may be wrong about the start but I will stand by the end.

Tom, you're a handsome guy.
