Steve-o,Whats wrong with this picture? Didn't we carry live ammo on the border and on guard duty.Absolutly insane to send a soldier out with an empty mag in his rifle.,and I think Patton would have been court marshalled because he was going to win ,period..

My Wife's nephew, a former Marine, is currently a buck Sergeant in the Army in Korea. ( DMZ ) He has 3 Combat Deployments under his belt and has the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. ( 2 Iraq tours and 1 Afghanistan ) When he joined the Army last year I told him about the ROE and asked him if he was SURE about joining. He bluntly said he would rather go to prison than the graveyard ! The Infantry grunts under him don't LIKE him very much because the first thing he did was turn them into Combat Marines ! He has more Ribbons than his First Sergeant ! SEMPER FI !

The ROE is putting our people in harm's way. I would have a round in my chamber, to protect my fellow members and my life.

The way the ROE's are right now,Patton couldn't win. Can't use artillery on a village or treeline you are taking fire from so as to reduce casualties. If someone fires at you and drops his weapon,you can't return fire.Some Commanders actually send out patrols with magazines in-but no rounds in the chamber. So you have that 2-second gap that could mean Life or death for you or one of your troops. You can't fire on an observer with binoculars and a cell phone tracking your patrol. there are 10 soldiers in Leavenworth right now,who were afforded less legal rights than the Detainees at Guantanamo,who are there for either following orders or disregarding the ROE. I believe that if i were still in I would probably be among them because NOTHING would keep me form ensuring the safety of my men to carry out the mission.

Chuck, a great many of us wore the Uniform during the Vietnam War and we remember well. My Brother was in the 'Nam while I was in the 3rd Sqdn. Camp Eagle, Phu Bai on the DMZ with the 101st Airborne. Poor bastard still won't talk about it and it's been over 41 years ! Others have told me things : there is the NVA ,but you can't shoot. there is a supply dump or vehicle park, but we can't bomb it. There is the port of Haiphong, full of ships and supplies but it is off limits to attack ! Crap, just 25 years earlier, we were sending Germany and Japan back to the stone age ! POLITICIANS, my friend, Politicians ran that war and run our current two Wars.

Ever since that "Police Action" in Korea we have, for some reason I don't understand, fought with one hand behind our back. War is a all or nothing sort of thing with me.
I signed up for a hand to hand combat course with Sgt Blackwood, the most dangerous man I've ever known. He had just came in from a place I'd not heard of, Vietnam in early '64 I think.
Before he started throwing us around the mats and beating us with a 3' stick, he said"First you want to bomb them, then hit 'em with arty and morters, then shoot'em, then bayonet'em, then hit'em with your rifle, then throw rocks at'em, because if your down to hand to hand you're in DEEP SHIT!
And that is my, and should be the Country's, philosophy of war fighting....bring it all, all the time !

Chuck, even before Alexander set foot in Bactria ( Afghanistan ) all the Natives knew nothing else but killing each other. Read " The Campaigns of Alexander " by Arrian. ( Arrianus ) This has been going on for over 2,500 years ! As for the Brits : " When you lie wounded on the Afghan plains, and the Afghan women come to cut your remains, just roll on your rifle and blow out your brains, and go to your God like a Soldier. " ( Kipling ) Our boys aren't ALLOWED to win ( the ROE's ) and that really ticks me off !!!

From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us

I hope the 2nd gets out of Afghanistan soonest...and everyone else for that matter. Military action in that Hell-hole has had bad outcomes since Alexander the Great broke his spear there....and the Brits...and the USSR.
Happy Vets Day Troops. I saw one of the Vet voter organizations, a Maj., who is going bad to Iraq....for the 5th TIME SINCE '03. Sweet Jesus.

This was the third design of the 2d Cavalry DUI, worn from 1924-1931. The sharp points on the ends of the bottom scroll again called for a redesign.
