Thanks for the heads-up, but no worries. Christa found her ticket out of Germany with an Air Force guy; however we did write for almost a year after my return.

Careful Terence, a lot of these gals and their kids are on Facebook now looking for daddy. I've had a few requests for help since word got out I was lucky with one gal and helped her find her dad.

A friend of hers in Germany had posted a photo here on Dragoon Base looking for information on the guy with her friend's mom. He left Germany before she was born and she didn't even know his name, just had that photo. The guy looked familiar but I didn't know him. I got the gal a unit roster and they were able to find him from that and she and her husband met him shortly before he passed away.

The crazy thing was, the whole time I was communicating with her through her friend in Germany, she was just minutes away from me at Ft. Lewis with her husband who was in the 2d Cavalry at the time. By the time I found out the 2d Cav had gone back to Germany. This was in 2006. In 2008 I visited the 2d Cav in Germany when they returned from their final deployment to Iraq. Her husband, a master sergeant, was still with the regiment and tracked me down after one of the ceremonies to let me know the details.

In 2011 I visited again when the regiment returned from their first Afghanistan deployment and he was now a sergeant major with the regiment. He spotted me at the beer tent and gave me his 2d Cavalry belt buckle.

This was the third design of the 2d Cavalry DUI, worn from 1924-1931. The sharp points on the ends of the bottom scroll again called for a redesign.
