"I served in L Trp out of Pond Barracks, 70-72, we sent a weekly jeep patrol down to Phillipsreut. Manned the op for most of the day, and met with the Bundesgrenzschutz. There was an old HQ building and a quonset hut for a barracks, but they were in…"
"One was the Geiger to Brem. We loaded on board on Dec.21st 1963. 9 days in that madhouse. Spent Christmas Eve sitting with an AIT buddy on a hold cover drinking bourbon in a raging storm. I never forget that New Years! Came back in June 1966.…"
"Denny, you are a pretty rare breed indeed. You're the first 9th Cav border trooper I've "met". You were there for the majority of 2/9's border mission.
I found this about 2/9 Cav on the border:
Prior to the departure of the…"
"Hey Rob! Sounds like you rotated off the border around 1966. What boat did you ride on back
to the states? I rode on the Grant.
I was at Rotz with the HHQ Troop, 2nd Recon Squadron 9th Armored Cav. Was permanent…"
"Rob, I think it may have changed in early 1973. There was a big shake-up in the areas of responsibility for the two Cav regiments on the border then.
It changed again about 1977 with 1/1 Cav taking Camp Pitman (Weiden) and 3/7 Cav taking Camp…"
"We(3rd sqd 2nd acr)took camp reed in 67. Went to the bar down the hill quite often. We'd stay til the CPs came to chase us out. Then we'd disconnect the low oil safety and go back to the camp and wait for them to call for mechanics for…"
What unit(s) did you serve in with the 2d Cavalry?
Where were you stationed?
Amberg and both of our border camps.
What MOS or job description did you have?
What was your rank/title?
What years were you assigned to the 2nd Cavalry?
Tell us a little about your cav days.
Young dumb kid in Germany. Grew up a little, drank a lot of beer, seen the sites and met a lot of good people.
Spent most of my time at Amberg with may be a year split between camps May and Rotz as permanent party medic. The camps were pretty boring time but easy job. Amberg was more work, mostly trying to stay out of site and mind.
And seeing the country driving a M113a(?) was a lot of fun. After hours were spent at the Roma, Chicky House by traffic circle, Chinese Restaurant at the bottom of the hill and many more Guesthouse downtown.
Buddies: Steve, Sam(Pain), Randy, Vance, Shepard, Stubs, Adams, Harrison, Russel, Lutes, Hayward, White, Evans and more.
Good to hear from you Mark. I don't know about Evans but Stan Vance got transferred to Munich and married a soldier (female) that had been stationed in Heidelberg with 1st PersCom. He got out after his enlistment and they moved to Placentia California where they have a son and a daughter and a couple of grandkids. I haven't seen them in a few years. Yea, if you have a couple of pictures of us, please do foward them. I lost all of mine in transit back to the states.
Toujours Pret Mark,
