Sorry to be the one to bust everyones bubble, but the TAPS story is one of those internet legends with no truth attached.

Try this story from the West Point website. It sounds a little more down to earth, but much less romantic....http://www.west-point.org/taps/Taps.html

For your friends loss, I send my sincere grief. Please tell your friend that his son was the advance party to Post Everlasting. His brothers in arms will join him in time. All gave some, some gave all. He is with all those who fell before him. Think of the stories he is hearing in first person!
Here is a promise from an old NCO. I will do everything in my power to welcome home each and every one I can. Never again like the way we were treated!

Nice post Robert I have seen the words somewhere before but I never knew the story behind the song

Colonels of the Regiment

8th Colonel of the Regiment Nelson B. Sweitzer 9 Jun 1886 – 29 Oct 1888

This was the third design of the 2d Cavalry DUI, worn from 1924-1931. The sharp points on the ends of the bottom scroll again called for a redesign.

Machine Gun Troop, 2d Cavalry; Adjutant General.
