Dragoon Base

Connecting the Troopers of Today with the Veterans of Yesterday.

I was told for thirty years I could not join my local V.F.W. . Because I was in the service when their was no wars between April 5 1976 to Aug.25. 1979 Well come to find out I could join the V.F.W. because I was in the Cav. and on the Border with a loaded small arms when I was patroling the border. Yes it's true. I got my membership pin today handed to me. NOW I FEEL LIKE A REAL VETERAN to me it was a great deal.
I hope this can help any Veteran if like to be a V.F.W. Member. If he was told that he could not join because the same reason The dates when he served.

HOOAH, Pete!!!

Got a warm handshake for ya, should we ever meet.

Gene, too many of us old farts for just a squadron. I think we are pushing Corps size (not to be confused with corpse).

There would not be any problem joining any Vet organization if the gov ha d recognized the border troops for thier service.Ther is a Korean defense metal, why was there never a European defense metal. We surely faced  probable danger in the performance of our duty. There were multable contacts with the opposition. There were shots fired. There were soldiers killed, yet our service has never been recognized.Kosovo lasted 3 months, they have a specific ribbon. We troopers know the dangers we faced. The ColdWar was the first war we actualy won since WW2.and before Kuwait. We ask for nothing but a small amount of recognition to let us know we did our job.Gene,I think you are right, most of us Volunteered,a decision I never regreted.Coming out of AIT I had orders forVM,but they were changed and went to another school then to THE ROCK.I feel very fortunate to have worked and befriended the best people of theUS ARMY.  TOUJORS PRET my friends JEFF

It seems some VFWs are letting us in and some are not, witch is neither her or there. The bottom line is we all served with pride and gladly do it again. My opinion is any org. that rejects us is their loss.Toujours Pret

There are plenty of veterans organizations out there for non-combat veterans. The 2d Cavalry Association is a good example.

A little history for you guys....the 2d Cavalry Association was the first, and is the oldest, unit specific veterans organization in the U.S., established in 1899 by our Regiments veterans from the Spanish-American War. Veterans of other units saw what a fine organization we had and wanted one of their own, since they couldn't join ours. The American Veterans of Foreign Service and National Society of the Army of the Philippines, for veterans of the Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War respectively, were formed later in 1899. Many 2d Cavalry veterans were eligible to join all three.

The latter two organizations combined in 1914 to form the Veterans of Foreign Wars. One might argue we inspired the formation of the VFW.

And yes Gene, we squeaked in under the wire for the NDSM. I knew something didn't look right about that 1979 date, but it was late and I was tired.
