Dragoon Base

Connecting the Troopers of Today with the Veterans of Yesterday.

I was told for thirty years I could not join my local V.F.W. . Because I was in the service when their was no wars between April 5 1976 to Aug.25. 1979 Well come to find out I could join the V.F.W. because I was in the Cav. and on the Border with a loaded small arms when I was patroling the border. Yes it's true. I got my membership pin today handed to me. NOW I FEEL LIKE A REAL VETERAN to me it was a great deal.
I hope this can help any Veteran if like to be a V.F.W. Member. If he was told that he could not join because the same reason The dates when he served.

American Legion life member 201968435, Dept. of WA, Post #2.

Disabled American Veterans life member 46018L69123, Dept. of WA, Chapter 18.

"If you have received a campaign medal for overseas service; have served 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea; or have ever received hostile fire or imminent danger pay, then you are eligible".

Quoted from the official VFW website. Seems pretty cut and dried. I have the NDSM, but no campaign medal thanks to the bureaucrats who refuse to acknowledge the casualties of the Cold War as just that, casualties of war.

I called the VFW here in killeen (ft hood tx) and was told no way could I join.the man was in the 11th ACR and said it wasn't right but the rules are the rules.I couldn't agree more the border wasn't a combat zone.IMHO being a member of the VFW just because you were in the 2nd ACR is just wrong.let the men that earned the right join and be members.

Hmmmm, is it just me or what? I called the local Post commander and told him I wanted to join. He said since I was an old friend he would try to get me in. I figured maybe he wasn't up on something.

He had one of his officer's contact me later and after a long chat, he told me I wasn't eligible for membership, but if I promised never to run for office he could sneak me in the back door because I was an old friend of the Commander. I told him no thanks!

Oh, well. I still have my Cold War Certificate. LOL!! I think my Trivia Contest certificates get more respect!!!

Thanks Norm. I just checked out on the internet the Post my mom and dad were life members of. Come to find out my brothers best friend from high school is the Post Commander. Guess I'll drop by and see about joining.

Already a life member of DAV, American Legion, 2d Cavalry Association, and numerous other military organizations. Might as well add VFW as long as I'm eligible.

This was the third design of the 2d Cavalry DUI, worn from 1924-1931. The sharp points on the ends of the bottom scroll again called for a redesign.
