The Best Cav Troop in The US Army 1 Reply

That is how we thought of ourself. I was there from Nov, 73 to Mar. 75. Capt. Crumley was out CO and demanded the best of us. I am proud to have served under his command.

Comment by Jose L Perez on January 20, 2016 at 3:45pm: A couple of days after I arrived in I troop, some sergeant told me to go to the motor and get a pneumatic key to unlock the vapor lock in his tank. Being a private E1, I was sure that he knew more about tanks that I did. So, I went to the motor pool to see the motor pool sergeant and ask for the pneumatic key. He said “Go to M troop motor pool and ask the sergeant for the key. He borrowed it yesterday”. So I went to M troop motor pool and asked for the key. “The guys from K troop took the key”, He said. “Go to the motor pool and get it”. So I went to K troop. I asked the sergeant for the key and he look at me and he said: “Son, how long have you been in the Army? “I been in I troop a couple of days, Sir”. Go back to I troop and tell your sergeant to call me. There is no pneumatic key for a vapor lock. This is a joke. Now go back to I troop. ” I went back to I troop motor pool and all the mechanics had a serious faces and then they began laughing their asses off.

Comment by Dave Gettman on January 13, 2016 at 10:00am: I was only at Gates once for about two weeks when I first got to the 2d Cav. I didn't have a clearance yet, so I couldn't do anything. Just sat around in the barracks. Nobody would talk to me because I was a former MP. Really sucked!

Wish I could have went back though. Seemed like a cool place being out in the boonies.

Comment by Dennis Erickson on January 12, 2016 at 11:29pm: Dave, I liked Gates better than Pitman. It was much more laid back, everyone left us alone. I enjoyed taking lunch out to the o.p., then stopping at the guesthaus in town (?) for my meal and of course a drink or two!

Comment by Dennis Erickson on January 12, 2016 at 7:01pm: I was in I troop from April 66 to Dec 68. Was supposed to rotate in early Jan but got an early out for Christmas. Spent most of border duty at Camp Gates but also at 3 other camps, even bunking with the Germans at a brick and morter camp when the Russians took over the border.

We broke up a lot of stuff and spent way to much time in the woods, but we kicked ass and partied hard. Gary I remember you.Me and Steve Carpenter were the best P-Rat a brother could have. I loved my time in 2nd and 3rd Plt. Hope to see you in October.

I've already got too much stuff boxed up for the museum. I can't afford to ship the sign also. I'd have to prove it served in Iraq before Ryan would want it for the museum anyway, and I can't confirm.
