"This sign is much more "fancy" than the sign that was out in front of the barracks (what with the artwork on the "Iron" and the artistic sabers).  If it was older than Iraq, it would be more like a sign that would have been…"

"Anyone remember this scene that looked like this on the left (as you pulled in) - And looked like this on the right? - I seem to remember there was some "border folklore" associated with this location.  Something along the lines of…"

"Taken within the Reed sector circa late '85 or early '86.  50 - 75 meters from border.  Probably a KGB robochicken electronically surveilling us."

"For those of you who served in I troop from 1985 - 1987 - You may remember me as the seemingly crazy guy who, when the alert siren went off, was running down down the hall with ruck in one hand and flak jacket in the other, taking stair flights in a…"

Profile Information

What unit(s) did you serve in with the 2d Cavalry?
I trp, 3rd Squadron/2nd ACR
Where were you stationed?
Pond Barracks, Amberg, FRG
What MOS or job description did you have?
19DE10 Cavalry Scout (with TOW missile qualification)
What was your rank/title?
Specialist 4th Class
What years were you assigned to the 2nd Cavalry?
1985 - 1987
Tell us a little about your cav days.
Served under the infamous Lt. Colonel Bird. Multiple border patrols out of Camps Reed and May. Was in the CP at Reed for a Christmas phone call from CiC Ronald Reagan. Started tour as scout on M113, then moved to ITV gunner, became Captain's jeep driver (with "Secret" clearance for taking Captain on tours of then current war plans), then became Bradley CFV gunner. Froze my ass off, enjoyed German food and beer (especially at the Roma), and left FRG at the same rank I came into it (a major feat at the time ... most soldiers got busted down rank over there).
Tell us a little about you now.
Became a civil engineer, two marriages, two daughters, two divorces.
Do you have a web site?
http://www.reverbnation.com/ronfranzen?profile_view_source=header_i...
Name a few buddies you served with that you would like to find.
Richard Hopfensperger
Mark Guidry (who I also served with in D trp/2nd Sqdrn/10th (Air) Cavalry Regt/7th ID (Light))
Stephen Otamura
Wayne(?..or was it Thomas?. .We always referred to each other by last names or nicknames over there) Alora
Captain Ernest P. Rogers (Troop commander for whom I drove jeep for quite awhile {more than a year ... which was kind of unheard of over there... because most CO jeep drivers only lasted a month before they were fired by the CO ... but the CO liked me {{no doubt because I saved his/our bacon a number of times with my defensive driving skills and because I was a true scout in that he only had to give me directions on how to get somewhere once ... after that it was committed to my memory}})
"Brick" (Maintenance guy who worked for SFC Cervantes who always kept me well supplied with petroleum products {especially axle grease} and spare U-joints...and who also gave me the nickname "Psycho" early on upon my arrival to I troop {which stuck with the rest of the unit from that point forward})

My son told me when he brought it home that he got it from a retiring Major at Fort Lewis who brought the sign home from Iraq and was tired of lugging it around.

My son brought that sign home from work one day. It sat in my garage for about 15 years before I gave it away.

2d DRAGOONS

This was the third design of the 2d Cavalry DUI, worn from 1924-1931. The sharp points on the ends of the bottom scroll again called for a redesign.
